Microsoft has officially announced that the standalone plans for SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business will be gradually phased out. With this step, Microsoft is aligning its portfolio even more consistently with modern, integrated collaboration and security solutions within Microsoft 365.
What does this change mean?
Starting in June 2026, the previous standalone plans (SharePoint Online Plan 1 & 2 and OneDrive for Business Plan 1 & 2) will no longer be available for new customers. Existing subscriptions can still be renewed but will expire no later than the end of 2029.
Microsoft cites the following reasons for this adjustment:
• Low demand for standalone plans
• Simplification of the licensing model
• Reduction of operational costs
• Focus on holistic use of the Microsoft 365 platform
Important: These services will not disappear. They will remain fully available as part of the Microsoft 365 suites – including all previous features and extended integrations.
Timeline overview
• Until May/June 2026: No new bookings for standalone plans
• Until 2027: Renewals for existing customers still possible (depending on the plan)
• Complete phase‑out by December 2029
