Microsoft Power BI Desktop – Update november 2022

In the November 2022 update of Microsoft's Power BI business intelligence solution, new features will be made available. We would like to present a few selected ones here.

Announcement of the new Power BI color accent
In the upcoming release, Power BI will update its yellow accent color to teal. The new color improves contrast and increases visibility of the user interface in Power BI, making the application even more user-friendly. The Power BI brand color and icon logo remain yellow.

Unshared and unsynchronized axes for charts with small multiples
Sometimes when reading a visual with small multiples, a user may only be interested in comparing the trends of each category over time. But if the ranges of the data for each small multiples category vary greatly, the charts with low maxima will be pushed down compared to charts with high maxima. So it can become difficult to evaluate the trend for lower charts as it becomes hard to see.

With the November update, the charts now get Y-axes, which can be individually scaled automatically. This gives you much clearer charts and makes it easier to compare values.

More info on this feature can be found here on the Power BI blog.

Create dynamic data slices using field parameters
Back in the summer, Microsoft released a preview that allows end users to dynamically change the metrics and dimensions analyzed in a report. The first version supported scenarios where data slices or filter maps could control which fields were used in different visuals.

It has now been extended, data sections can now be parameterized to support the dynamic filter scenarios.

You can read more details about it here.

Streamlined report creation with the Optimize menu ribbon
Microsoft has announced the public preview of the Optimize ribbon in Power BI Desktop. It's a ribbon designed to streamline report creation - especially in DirectQuery mode. Ever wanted to prevent Visuals from loading data while you're still making changes? Ever wanted to edit multiple DAX metrics without refreshing the report area between those edits? Have you ever wanted to take full control of when the graph is updated? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then "Pause visuals" is for you. Being able to pause visuals gives you control over when visuals send DAX queries. This makes your edits easier and faster. Once you've completed your edits, refresh the entire visual with one click:

Complete control over refreshing the visuals - Switch to the Optimize ribbon, click Stop Visuals, as in the screenshot below, and from now on visuals will not be updated automatically. Click Refresh Visuals when you are ready for visuals to run their queries and update their data.

Here you can find more about the functionalities of the new menu ribbon.

New method for uploading Power BI and Excel files
Microsoft has introduced a new, streamlined experience for uploading files to the Power BI service. In the workspace you want to add files to, you will see an Upload option next to the New button. You can use this dropdown to connect to files stored in OneDrive for Business or any SharePoint site you have access to, or upload them from your computer using the "Browse" option.

When you upload a local file, a copy of that file is added to the workspace. If you use the OneDrive or SharePoint option, Power BI creates a connection to the file, and when you make changes to the file in SharePoint, Power BI can automatically synchronize those changes every hour or so.

For more benefits of the new method, see the Power BI blog.

Subscribe to reports with custom filters
You can now create subscriptions to a view of a Power BI report that is relevant only to you. When creating a new subscription, simply select the "Include my changes" option to subscribe to the view of the report as you currently see it, including any changes you have made. When you select the "Include my changes" option, the view of the report sent to your email will include any of the following changes: Filter, Data Sections, Visual Personalization, Cross Filtering or Cross Highlighting, Drilldown or Drillup, and Spotlight.

The Power BI blog elaborates on this feature here.

This and other features and info about the November update can be found on the Microsoft Power BI blog and in the video here.
