Microsoft strengthens data protection in the EU

Microsoft recently announced significant updates to its cloud services in the European Union. At the center of these updates is the EU Data Border, an initiative that aims to keep and process all personal data within Europe.

The extension of the EU data boundary for the Microsoft Cloud focuses on three main areas: First, the inclusion of all types of personal data, including pseudonymized data from system logs, in EU data storage and processing. Second, providing new transparency resources (documents and online information sources) for customers to gain insights into data processing operations, see also Strong Data Integrity in the Cloud | Microsoft Trust Center. And thirdly, increased investment in EU-based technologies to protect pseudonymized data.

These changes are part of Microsoft's commitment to respecting European values and ensuring world-class cyber security. This includes documenting all data transfers outside the EU data border for security purposes and limiting these transfers to what is necessary.

Microsoft also plans to further develop the processing and storage capacities over the course of the year to enable technical support within the EU data border. This includes a paid support option for technical support from the EU.

With these steps, Microsoft is demonstrating its commitment to go beyond European compliance requirements and provide trusted cloud services that both leverage the benefits of the public cloud and incorporate European values and advanced sovereignty controls.
