Office 365: Microsoft regulates Self-Service Purchases

Microsoft recently announced in a statement to U.S. customers and users of Office 365 and the Power Platform products that as of November 19, 2019, individual products such as Power BI, Flow, or PowerApps can be booked directly by the user and paid for by credit card. Other countries have not yet been announced, but anyone who has observed the development of Microsoft in recent years knows that it is only a matter of time before this will also change in the European market.

The possible detour in an enterprise system past the administrator or an approval process is, however, not uncritical. For example, if company data is unwantedly linked to new sources - or the user unknowingly books a service that is already available to the company.

The justified and growing criticism of some Office 365 customers has now prompted Microsoft to provide administrators with a method based on PowerShell that allows them to block the self-service purchase. In addition, the start for self-service purchases has been postponed until January 14, 2020.
