EU Data Boundary for Microsoft Cloud Solutions

Microsoft promises that data of customers from the European Union will also only be stored within the EU. This announcement applies to all central cloud services from Microsoft - Azure, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 and is to be implemented by the end of 2022.

Microsoft's cloud services already comply with the EU regulations - even without the innovations that will then be added. Enterprise and public sector customers can already store their data in the EU. Many Azure services can be configured so that data is also processed within the EU. In addition, Microsoft offers highly effective encryption and robust lockbox solutions that comply with current regulatory requirements. With many of these services, control over the encryption of data is in the hands of the customers themselves through the use of customer-managed keys. In addition, Microsoft further protects customer data from unauthorised access by government agencies.

The EU data boundary for the Microsoft Cloud builds on major investments in European data centre infrastructure. The programme will use data centres that Microsoft already operates or has announced in 13 countries: Austria, France, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. These data centres will operate cloud services designed to help European users realise their digital transformation goals and increase their competitiveness - with the assurance that they can do so in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. In addition to customers in EU countries, the offering will also be available to users in Norway and Switzerland.
