Microsoft Power BI Desktop – Update September 2022

In the September 2022 update of Microsoft's business intelligence solution Power BI, new features were made available. We present a few selected ones here.

Translation support for composite models in Power BI datasets and Analysis Services

With the September update, translations are now supported for composite models in Power BI datasets and Analysis Services. Translations allow the tables and columns in the dataset to be displayed in the language the user prefers.

Translations can also be added to a composite model. To ensure that local translations are not overwritten by translations defined in the source, the Altered property can be set to true for the corresponding object.

More info on translation support can be found here in the Power BI blog.

Mobile formatting options

Mobile formatting options are now generally available. Mobile formatting options allow visual elements to be designed and formatted in a mobile-optimised layout without affecting the formatting in the web layout.

The Power BI Blog explains more about this at this point.

Cross-client dataset sharing

This feature is now available in Public Preview and allows customers to share their Power BI datasets with external users (consumers) in such a way that these external users can access the datasets in their own Power BI client.

The consumers can work with these shared datasets in their own client and create composite models by linking the shared datasets to their own internal data. The composite model can then be published in the service for reporting purposes.

With direct sharing, the shared data remains with the provider client. Consumers query the shared datasets directly in the source data systems. They can also use the direct query method to connect to external datasets and create their own composite models and reports based on the shared data, eliminating the need to manually transfer data between organisations. These composite models built on external datasets can also be analysed in Excel. This feature is particularly useful when you want to share data with external partners, customers, subsidiaries, suppliers, consultants and other business partners.

More details here in the Microsoft Power BI Blog.

You can find these and other features and info on the August update on the Microsoft Power BI Blog and here in the video:
