After more than 20 years, an era is coming to an end: the Microsoft Open Licence programme will be discontinued on 31 December 2021. This means that Open Licence will make way for new forms of licensing adapted to a digital world.
What alternatives are there?
New, suitable licensing options of perpetual software licences are expected to be available from January 2021 via the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) licensing programme.
What do you as a customer need to be prepared for?
Customers who previously only purchased software licences (perpetual software) without software assurance via Open Licence will be able to purchase these via the CSP licensing model from 2022.
Customers who previously also purchased Software Assurance via Open Licence can obtain this via Open Value and Open Value Subscription after their old SA contract expires.
Customers who have purchased online services via Open Licence can purchase supplementary online services via the CSP licensing programme.
Nothing changes in the Open Value and Open Value Subscription programmes.
Purchasers continue to have full rights and access to all perpetual software licences purchased through Microsoft Open Licence.
Software Assurance contracts including all benefits remain valid until their regular expiry date - even if this is after 31 December 2021.
